Merrill Hall/Center for Urban Horticulture – is the keystone facility for the Center for Urban Horticulture, within the College of Forest Resources (Miller Hull/Keen). The Center is an applied research and teaching facility and houses outreach programs, administrative offices, the Elizabeth C. Miller Horticultural Library, student study space, and ecological research labs. The structure is a 17,022-sf, two-story, wood framed construction that was extensively damaged in an arson fire. Seventy percent of the structure required demolition. In the area not damaged, the structure was smoke sealed.
This project is LEED Silver certified. the project achieved 36 LEED credit points. Merrill Hall is the first UW Seattle Campus LEED certified building.. Some of the sustainable practices incorporated into the project include:
- flexible, efficient building that brings nature into the building and merges with the natural world around it;
- reduced overall building energy use; use of environmental materials, construction waste management;
- storm water management; water conserving fixtures (30% savings in potable water use);
- native plantings and drip irrigation to reduce water consumption from irrigation
- natural daylighting, views to outside and operable windows where possible;
energy efficient design;
- bike parking and nearby shower facilities;
- local low-emitting, and recycled content materials;
- low finish building aesthetic that reduces material use;
- reuse portions of existing structure; etc.
